going green
Going green? Wondering where to start? Where better than at the beginning? Every day we hear or read news stories regarding the environment and how our actions today will ultimately affect our children’s’ tomorrows. It can be rather bewildering trying to filter through the conflicting messages we receive regarding pollution, greenhouse gases, climate change, organic / non-organic and chemicals in our beauty products. The list goes on and on. The one thing we can be sure of is that something needs to be done and we all need to participate in this by changing some of our everyday habits. A number of local stores have recently led the way by introducing such initiatives as no longer handing out free plastic bags. By adapting to this and taking our own bags with us we will reduce the numbers of plastic carriers found cluttering landfills, flapping from trees, floating in the breeze, clogging roadside drains, drifting on the high seas (including Weymouth harbour) and filling sea turtle bellies. It’s not all about plastic bags though; these are obvious pollutants that we can see but what about those that we can’t? Did you know that many of the everyday cleaning products that we use around our homes contain unnecessary and environmentally harmful ingredients? Cleaning products are something we use nearly every day and in doing so we invite potentially dangerous chemicals into our homes. These products get washed down our drains and into the wider environment. Overall these products will not be doing our health or the environment much good. Bubbles, for example, have nothing to do with cleaning power, they just look good. Foam boosters are added, even though this makes the product less biodegradable. Once we have washed these products down our sinks; they will ultimately end up in rivers and lakes. They can jeopardise the life cycles of these environments and impact on aquatic systems. We are entrusted with the care of this planet. We owe it to God, ourselves and the generations to come, to look after it. The choices we make today will affect not only our children, but our grandchildren too. Whether the threat comes from our ever-increasingly disposable society or from chemically treated cotton or chemical filled products, what we use today can not only harm our environment, but also affect our children’s health tomorrow. There are a number of products that are on the market today that are more environmentally friendly. Why not give them a go? Worried about the cost? Did you know that there is a new local company in Weymouth that offers a refill service for Ecover washing up liquid, softener and toilet cleaner? Their refill prices are cheaper than the equivalent product sold in local stores and they will come direct to your home. Check out their website: www.greenbeginnings.co.uk or phone Samantha on 01305 784799. They stock a large array of green, organic and natural personal care, baby and home products to chose from and they will be delivered to your front door for free. Let’s take the initiative and drive change ourselves
