Is cancer incidence increasing?

By Samantha Lucken

I have just received news that another of my friends has been diagnosed with cancer and that the outlook is rather bleak. Is it just me or do other people feel that cancer is all around us in the developed world? The incidence of cancer in all ages seems to be increasing all the time. We can not simply say that this is down to the fact that we are living longer as this illness affects all ages, both old and young. I truly believe that our increasing reliance on chemicals in our everyday lives must be playing a part in this increase. I don't say that it is THE cause but there must be an element of interplay between genetics and environmental factors. We use chemicals for everything these days. We have them on our fresh non-organic food, in our processed ready meals, on the products we wash in and place on our skin and hair, in our female sanitary products, in our cleaning products and even our everyday utensils and in our clothing. The list is basically without end. We no longer live in harmony with nature and process and manipulate everything.
We are the experimental generation. When my parents were younger they did not live as we do and did not have creams and potions to rub all over themselves but by the time they were having our generation they were being encouraged to put us in disposable nappies, feed us bottled milk, apply baby lotions to our skins and then encourage us to continue to do so as we grew. Food was slowly but surely becoming intensively farmed and chemicals were appearing on our foods without them ever realising it etc, etc.
I know that experiments have been carried out on product safety and found levels of chemicals to be harmless (though it is interesting to note that different countries have different rules for what is acceptable and what isn't)but lets face it, we're not that stupid; anyone can work out that each product is tested separately but they don't test for the accumulative effect of using many different products each and every day, one on top of the other. How do these chemicals react together and when I moisturise twice a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, thus 728 times a year, minimum, what effect does this have?

I look forward to hearing your views. Please remember to bare in mind that these are just my thoughts but do feel free to mull them over.
