Organic Essentials for your New Baby on the Maternity Ward

By Samantha Lucken of Green Beginnings

About to have a baby? Preparing for your new arrival? Want to raise your children the organic way. If you have answered yes to all these questions then do please read on.

It's a nervous time waiting for the birth of your first child. Will it hurt? Will I cope? Will everything be O.K? What do I need to take to the hospital?

The one thing that you can be prepared for is what to put in your overnight bag for your new arrivals first 24 hours.

Your new baby has spent the last 9 months being cocooned in your womb and so has been protected from any external pollutants. To protect your baby from as many unnecessary chemicals as possible it is best to take great care and attention over what you put on their bodies and in their immediate environments. So what should you take to hospital with you? Your baby will need some clothing so take a lovely soft organic baby vest and baby grow and organic cotton blanket. Organic cotton has been grown without the use of pesticides which will inevitably leave residues on the clothes of non-organic cotton clothes.

You will need nappies for your newborn and washables are the best. Whilst you are adjusting to your new addition you could try Moltex biodegradable nappies - the eco-friendly alternative for disposables. Whilst changing your babies bottom you should only use cooled boiled water and cotton wool. Of course you should ensure that your cotton wool is organic. If you prefer baby wipes do make sure that they are organic and contain no nasties. Try such brands as Natracare, Earth Friendly Baby or Beaming Baby. All of these brands are equally good and provide a chemical free alternative to the major brands you find on the high street.

Believe it or not these are the only true essentials that you will need to look after your baby during the first few days of it's life and beyond. Everything else you need you already have within you - love, milk and more love. Don't believe the hype that you read elsewhere.

So to recap you need:
organic baby clothes,
eco-friendly nappies
organic cotton wool or organic baby wipes.

Good luck with your baby and your new organic life together.
